Ivan Nikolaevtsev was born to a peasant family. Later his family moved to Moscow. In 1914 Nikolaevtsev finished with honours the 2nd municipal school of the Liberation of peasants. In 1921 he entered the Higher Artistic and Technical Printing Workshops under the D. I. Sytin’s Printery. There Nikolaevtsev studied under the guidance of L. F. Zhegin, N. M. Chernyshev, M. S. Rodionov, S. V. Gerasimov, and M. A. Dobrov. Later he taught in these Printing Workshops.
Nikolaevtsev was a member of the groups Makovets and Put’ Zhivopisi (“The Way of Painting”); he participated in exhibitions of the groups. In 1927 he attended the studio of I. I. Nivinsky.
In 1934 Nikolaevtsev designed books for the publishing house Sovetsky Pisatel (“Soviet Writer”). He was appointed art director of the publishing house (till 1951). Nikolaevtsev also collaborated with other publishing houses. In 1939–1940 he designed the ten-day festivals of the Tajik art.
Since 1938 Nikolaevtsev was a member of Moscow Section of the Union of Artists (MOSKh).
