In 1921–1923 Vasily Khmelyuk studied at Krakov Academy of Arts under the guidance of V. Yarotsky. In 1926–1927 he attended the Charles University in Prague. In 1928 he finished the Ukrainian Studio of Plastic Art in Prague. Since 1928 Khmelyuk lived and worked in Paris. He became one of significant figures of art life in Paris. Famous collectors A. Vollard, I. Shchukin bought his paintings.
Khmelyuk published three books of his poetry in Prague (1923–1928). His works were exposed in exhibitions in European galleries in England, Italy and Switzerland in 1933–1936. Since 1943 Khmelyuk exposed his works at the gallery Durand-Ruel in Paris. Khmelyuk painted landscapes, portraits and still lifes.
Works by Vasily Khmelyuk are in Lviv Art Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Oxford University Gallery, the museums of London, New York, Philadelphia, Munich, Toronto, Stockholm and others.
